About Dr. Domian

Alan Domian, Ph.D.
I am a licensed psychologist specializing in psychotherapy with adults and couples. The problems can either be situational or complex.

My focus is on the psychological components of problems as opposed to medication intervention. It is my belief that the purpose of psychotherapy is to help the patient get through stuck points. The criterion for successful therapy is that the patient feels relief and a new way to think about his or her problems. Treatment need not be lengthy, but can be depending on the particular problem.

Areas in which I am often asked to provide professional service include the following:
  • Anxiety reactions, e.g. obsessive ruminating over life dilemmas, panic attacks, or trauma.
  • Depressive reactions, e.g. inability to function to one’s potential, procrastination, suicidal ideation, grief.
  • Emotional or relational problems, either individual or couples, e.g. seemingly intractable conflicts, chronic distancing, affairs, sexual problems, etc.

I have worked as a psychotherapist since 1974 with adults, couples, children and families in a variety of outpatient and inpatient settings. However, over the past 8 years, I have received intensive weekly training in analytic and couple therapy from two of most prominent innovators in the field out of Berkeley Calif.

Past experience includes director of psychological services at a psychiatric hospital, director of a residential treatment center, psychotherapist at a university counseling center, and consultant/in-service trainer to various mental health and business organizations. I have conducted hundreds of psychological evaluations for forensic and treatment purposes. Over the years, I have lectured at local colleges, universities, and internship programs on couples and adult psychotherapy.

I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas in 1972 and master's degree in 1977. My doctoral degree is from the University of Missouri at Kansas City in their APA-approved counseling psychology program. My internship was at the V.A. Medical Center in Leavenworth, Kan. As a licensed psychologist in both Missouri and Kansas, I am a member of the American Psychological Association, the Greater Kansas City Psychological Association, and the Missouri Psychological Association. My wife and I have two adult children.
